James’ trip to South Korea and Japan
I recently had the pleasure of visiting South Korea and Japan, the latter of which holds special significance for me, as my mother is from Japan.
I’d always wanted to experience South Korea’s unique blend of history, culture, and cuisine, so I was thrilled to start my trip in Seoul.
Immersing myself in the vibrant street markets, local food, and lively atmosphere was unforgettable.
A highlight was visiting the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the only DMZ in the world where two countries – North and South Korea – remain technically at war. Seeing North Korea, a nation so isolated from the rest of the world, with my own eyes was incredible and deepened my understanding of the region’s complex history.
From Seoul, I flew to Osaka, my mother’s hometown in Japan.
It’s always a pleasure to reconnect with family who are so far away, and Osaka’s fantastic food scene, unique vibe, and rich culture make each visit unforgettable. The city’s energy and culinary traditions make it a place I look forward to visiting every time.
I ended my trip on Ishigaki Island, where I met up with friends who were also visiting their families in Japan. Surrounded by beautiful beaches and breathtaking scenery, it was the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Growing up in the UK with Japanese heritage has instilled a deep appreciation for my cultural roots. Each visit to Japan strengthens that connection and enriches my understanding of the culture that is such an integral part of my identity.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit, I highly recommend it – it’s an experience like no other.
