Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am raising funds for what is commonly known as the silent killer. My wife was fortunate enough to have received a live donation from her sister 5 years ago. All is currently still good and the new kidney is functioning well with 3 monthly check ups at Guys Hospital. My wife is physically fit and goes to the gym twice a week. So life has been restored to a normal life compared with having to go on dialysis 2/3 times per week.
What most people don't realise is that siblings (brothers and sisters) have a 25% probability of being nearly a perfect match for a live donation. Whilst also the potential donor who donates not only saves the recipient's life, but the donor lives a very normal life after donation with no after effects. We only need one kidney to live a perfectly normal life. Waiting for a dead donors kidney is a lottery and perfect matches are few and far. Whilst also the success rate is not as good as a live donation who have been screened and checked carefully in advance.
With the extreme shortage of kidneys, funds for research are in short supply. Kidney research tends to get overlooked whilst the big charities tend to get the majority of the money. The SWTK fund is a small charity run by volunteers, none of whom get paid and drain the charities with salaries, pensions, employment contracts whereby employees have rights to sickness and time off for pregnancies etc. The SWTK fund raises approx. £300,000 per annum and all the money goes to the charity for research and good causes. So any donations made are assured to be put to good use.
